About the campaign

Taking in to consideration, the challenges faced by irregular migrants, mainly the youths, with the fund secured from Cei/VIDES, the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) in collaboration with the Catholic Secretariats Diocese of Addis Ababa, Diocese of Meki, Diocese of Adigrat and Diocese of Gambella, launched a national program that aims to contribute to the reduction of youths entering into irregular migration, in all its Schools, Communities, and Youth Centers. SDB Planning and Development Office (PDO) is working towards reducing the rate of irregular migration and the involvement in human trafficking.

Currently, Human Trafficking is an issue of global concern. Salesians of Don Bosco, where most of the activities are involved with the young people, is working on creating and raising awareness to potential target youths. It is indicated that individual characteristics such as gender, socio-economic status, education, employment, and personal aspirations may be related to an individual’s likelihood of being trafficked. On the basis of this given fact, it is the current socio-economic, political and cultural problems which have forced to human trafficking in the contemporary period.

Despite the high risk of irregular migration, people, especially the young people are still irregularly migrating, where many of them end up in the hands of human traffickers. These people still choose to migrate and risk death than stay at home and try to look the opportunities that they have in their own country. Salesians of Don Bosco in addition to showing the dangers and consequences of irregular migration and human trafficking, is also sensitizing the target groups, in a way which is possible to help them bring behavioural changes on their work habits in their own country.

This National project aim is “To reduce the rate of irregular migration among Ethiopian people and their involvement in human trafficking”. It aims to contribute to the reduction of youths, entering into irregular migration, in all direction of the country where SDB working, including Schools, Communities, and Youth Centers.

The operational areas of intervention are;

  • Archeparchy of Addis Ababa,
  • Catholic Eparchy of Adigrat,
  • Apostolic Vicariate of Gambella
  • Apostolic Vicariate of Meki

In this regard, the means of intervention is through utilizing various congregations under each diocese, through the centers they run like schools, youth centers, clinics, women promotion centers, etc… The role of regional and city administrations such as Gambella, Oromia and Tigray Regional State & Addis Ababa City Administration is in a profound manner.

Awareness creation about human trafficking 

 The project is organized in 3 phases. It is working towards:

PHASE No.1: Fight/prevention to human trafficking through the realization of a national awareness and information campaign on the phenomenon. 

Strengthen the system for the promotion of prevention, people involvement in human trafficking, through the establishment of network between public and private sectors involved. 

Increase the awareness and knowledge of the dynamics and risks related to human trafficking and exploitation of illegal migration to the population especially to the youth.

PHASE No.2: Realization of studies of local contexts and needs assessments in different field of human life (education, health, training, job opportunities, women empowerment, etc.) in order to provide detailed information required for planning development projects.

Improve the knowledge of local contexts and the assessment of the local needs in order to plan effective development programs aimed to improve the main causes of poverty that are at the origin of migration.

PHASE No. 3: On the basis of the migration, elaboration and implementation of developed projects, in order to “act” “on the structural causes of poverty, social- economic discontent, etc…

In order to reduce the rate of migration, develop and implement programs aimed at reducing the rate of poverty and improve the living conditions of the local population.

So far, the SDB/PDO in collaboration with Catholic Secretariats, is working on Phase 1 & 2. Through the realization of a national awareness and information campaign on the phenomenon (Phase 1) and realization of studies of local contexts and needs assessments in different field of human life like education, health, training, job opportunities, women empowerment, etc. (Phase 2) in order to provide detailed information, required for well planned development projects. These two foremost interventions are operational and functioning.

To this period, SDB/ PDO have performed;

  • Brochures, Booklets and Posters are prepared and reached the target groups,
  • Distribution of printed materials to schools, youth centers and Communities are performed,
  • Training of Trainers (TOT) for teachers in various school, and youth center, on the dangers of irregular migration/human trafficking is Organize and performed.
  • Conference with returnees and youths, where they give testimonies of what they have been through is conducted. This conference was done with the youth.
  • PSA video & Documentary production is developed to address the fundamental nature of the problem.

In all parts of the country, every corner of Ethiopia has experienced the problem of human trafficking. Thus the existing parts of Ethiopia affected from the problem of human trafficking.
